A field of 492 crosses commemorated those who lost their lives in the Battle of Broodseinde including Dave Gallaher who captained the 1905 "Originals" All Blacks. A giant poppy decorated the Eden Park field and the flags of New Zealand and Belgium flew atop the goalposts.
All day visitors walked among the crosses and watched archive images of the war on the big screens. A dusk service featured the Navy Band, Catafalque Guard Changeover, laying of wreaths and a flypast by the War Birds. A stirring Haka was performed by the Defence Blacks and acknowledged by Auckland Schools' rugby players led by former All Black Captain Buck Shelford.
